PSHEE & Relationships Education

Our Vision

To provide pupils with the knowledge and education to make informed decisions about their wellbeing, health and relationships and to build their self-efficacy by delivering a curriculum that prepares them for the opportunities, responsibilities and experiences of adult life.

Our Intent

At Fens Primary School, we understand that pupils must be provided with an education that prepares them for the opportunities, responsibilities and experiences of adult life. A key part of this relates to PSHEE and Relationships Education. Relationships education focusses on giving pupils the knowledge they need to make informed decisions about their wellbeing, health and relationships, and to build their self-efficacy. Health education focusses on equipping pupils with the knowledge they need to make good decisions about their own health and wellbeing.

Through these lessons, children will learn how to stay safe and healthy, build and maintain successful relationships and become active citizens, responsibly participating in society around them. PSHEE and Citizenship units aim to cover a wide range of the social and emotional aspects of learning, enabling children to develop their identity and self-esteem as active, confident citizens. The themes and topics support social, moral, spiritual and cultural development whilst demonstrating the fundamental British values of Democracy, Rule of Law, Individual Liberty and Respect and Tolerance.

How We Implement Our PSHEE & Relationships Education Curriculum

The delivery of the Relationships and Health education coincide with one another are delivered as part of the school’s PSHEE curriculum. At Fens Primary, we are dedicated to ensuring our curriculum meets the needs of the whole-school community and organise it to ensure that it is age-appropriate for pupils within each year group. Objectives are taught based on the PSHE Association guidance which are incorporated into medium term and short term planning. We supplement our teaching using resources from Twinkl, BBC and a range of age appropriate texts. All children are catered for within PSHEE lessons through differentiation of activities, resources and support to ensure that the teacher can offer the necessary support and challenge to ensure each individual can make good progress and reach their true potential. We ensure PSHEE is taught in creative and engaging lessons using a range of activities to suit all learners, including external visitors to enhance children’s deeper understanding of concepts.

How We Measure the Impact of Our PSHEE & Relationships Education Curriculum

By the end of Primary School:

  • Children will have developed the vocabulary and confidence needed to clearly articulate their thoughts and feelings in a climate of openness, trust and respect, and know when and how they can seek the support of others.
  • They will apply their understanding of society to their interactions within communities, from the classroom to the wider community of which they are a part.
  • Children will have the skills to evaluate and understand their own wellbeing needs, practise self-care and contribute positively to the wellbeing of those around them.
  • Children will have developed the knowledge, skills and attributes they need to succeed at school and in the wider world
